February - 2012

Dear Nature Lovers,
Greetings from oikos !

Some of the orchids are now becoming very rare due to habitat loss. We need to conserve them along with the host plants. Oberonia brunoniana is one such orchid that needs positive effort for conservation.
Very few orchids flower during February… one of them is Tamravarni.

Regards,
Ketaki & Manasi.

Oberonia brunoniana (Scientific name)
It is a rare epiphytic orchid, which is endemic to Western Ghats. In Marathi it is called as ‘Tamravarni’ because of the color of the leaves, also known as ‘Russet orchid’. It is also known as Rat-tailed orchid because of the long inflorescence similar to tail of the rat.
It is mostly found on lower branches of plants in riparian zones.

It flowers during January - February. Leaves are present throughout the year. Size is around 15 – 25 cm. Conservation status of this orchid is ‘near threatened’.
