June - 2012

Dear Nature Lovers,
Greetings from oikos !

Our high rainfall areas welcome monsoon in a very gorgeous way ... with the flowering of Fox tail orchid. This orchid, which is called as ‘Sitechi veni’ in Marathi, righty mimicking garlands, adorns the trees with its blossom, mesmerizing the beauty of first showers.

Regards,
Ketaki & Manasi.

Rhynchostylis retusa (Scientific name)
This is a very common epiphytic orchid found in high rainfall areas of Western Ghats and Kokan. It is also called as ‘Sitechi veni’ in Marathi due to its similarity to garland of flowers. Due to the shape of the inflorescence, it is also called as Fox tail orchid. In Asam and Meghalaya, the flowers are woven in hair of prospective bride during a ceremony.
Many trees are seen to be loaded with 20 to 30 of these inflorescences at a time.
