September - 2015

Dear Nature Lovers,
Greetings from oikos !

Few grass specie are multipurpose, like Coix or कशेड.
This grass grows vigorously in wetlands, along ponds or old paddy terraces.
It is an effective soil binder, forms a nice habitat for insects and birds.

Being very tall grass, it is also used in thatching the roof.
In certain parts of India, leaves are used as fodder.

Also, it is popularly known for its edible seeds.
It’s a favorite activity of village kids to roast the fruit, remove its hard shell and eat the seed.
Being hardy, it is also used by tribal women as bead and they make it into necklace.

Regards,
Ketaki & Manasi.
