June - 2016

Dear Nature Lovers,
Greetings from oikos !

Orange Oakleaf is occasionally found in hill forests of India.
Name refers to the orange color on upper side of wings and resemblance to oak leaf.
Scientific name : Kallima inachus,  Family : Nymphalidae (Brush-footed butterflies)
Occasionally seen in hills with evergreen dense forests.
Always seen in understory of forests, along streams.
Attracted to overripe fruits, tree sap & damp patches.

Adaptation of escape threats :
Perfect example of camouflage and strategy to escape threat.
It is extremely realistic mimicking even the brown decaying spots on leaf.
When in danger it flies erratically, soon dropping down into the foliage
and occupying a stationary pose with wings closed,
so that the birds are very often quite unable to find them.
In such a pose, the butterfly resembles a dried leaf and is perfectly camouflaged.
Larval Food plants:
आग्या बोंड / बिच्छू - Girardinia diversifolia
Commonly seen shrub in hills forests, in semi shaded areas.
Known for its stinging hair all over the plant.
But it is very useful plant for extraction of fiber.

Regards,
Ketaki & Manasi.
